Ed Sheeran Don’t
The artist
in this music video is only seen once throughout the entire video. This is
unusual for a pop music video as it is conventional for pop music to see the
artist throughout the whole video. This makes this video different from its
genre of music.
The Mise en scene in the
music video was thought about and planned well. Firstly the setting is used
well, this is because there are multiple locations used so that it keeps the
audience interested and not get bored of the same setting. Also with the
setting they have made it so that it changes in status, an example is when at
the start when he is sleeping what looks like to be a junk yard, then to a
motel, then a house and then to a mansion.
Costume was
also planned well, this is because when the character changes what he wears
when the setting changes. It changes to the same sort of status as the setting
from lower class to higher class. This makes the audience interested as they
wonder why he is changing what he is wearing and why he keeps changing where he
is going.
The cinematography
in the music video is used well. There are a lot of close ups and long to mid
shots of the characters movement. From these shots the movement fully expresses
to the audience his personality and the type of person that he is, it also
makes the audience think why is he moving like that in that way.
Also the camera
is filmed hand held which we normally tend to see in a pop music video. This is
used well as it feels like the audience is getting involved with the video.
Finally editing
is different in the pop music video. As we don’t see the main artist Ed Sheeran
there is no lip syncing which is unusual for the music video not to have it as
it is a convention or a traditional music video. Also there are fast paced cut
which are on beat which links to Andrew Goodwin’s theory of being an illustration
or amplification video as it cuts on beat and the images also have a literal
meaning.
